Robert Eggers Eyes Willem Dafoe for A Christmas Carol Remake

Willem Dafoe set for A Christmas Carol?

Robert Eggers is adapting A Christmas Carol for the screen and has Willem Dafoe in mind to lead his cast as Scrooge.

The Spider-Man actor has worked with Eggers previously, starring in Nosferatu, The Northman and The Lighthouse, and the director now has got Dafoe in mind for the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the protagonist of Charles Dickens’ definitive Christmas story.

The novella, adapted for the screen numerous times before, follows Scrooge as he is visited by three Christmas ghosts. Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come inspire the miserly old man to kindness and generosity.

According to Deadline, Eggers is writing the script with Dafoe in mind, although casting negotiations aren’t happening yet.

The director is fond of working with Dafoe, describing him to CBR: “Willem just likes to jump in and do! I mean, obviously, he’s one of the greatest actors of all time, but also working with him on set is also a pleasure, because he can just inhabit the world so completely and so effortlessly.”

Eggers is known for historical films with folkloric elements and eerie atmospheres. Although very few will be unfamiliar with the Dickens story, Eggers’ direction could lead the material to new territory. And, if Dafoe indeed leads the cast of A Christmas Carol, it could be his most intriguing project yet.

Eggers is also set to direct long-gestating sequel to 1986’s classic Labyrinth although the latter to the two is still very much in the development stage and the director could make Carol first. Stay tuned on that one.
